I'm reminded of a time when I was 4 or 5. My brother was playing his record player and the song playing got my attention. He played it again for me so I could hear the whole thing. The song was "Teen Angel" and it made me cry. It was so sad!*(lyrics following blog entry)
Music's been getting to me ever since. The songs "getting to me" tonight are /Garth Brook's "More Than A Memory"/Mathchbox Twenty's "Back 2 Good"/Curtis Stiger's "I Think It's Going To Rain Today"/The duet "Because of You" by Reba and Kelly Clarkson/Faith Hill's "Paris"/"Do the Walls Come Down" by Carly Simon/
An odd assortment but they feel good tonight. It's kind of embarrassing to find I have 622 songs in my "Favorite Songs" playlist. They're not all "top-shelf" but there's a story or memory behind most of them.
It seems we expend a great deal of time and energy on the bigger things in life. The next vacation, weddings, graduations, job promotions, Christmas, anniversaries, birthdays, etc. The little things can get lost in the shuffle. While I know I'm guilty of that on occasion I really pray I never lose sight of those simple pleasures; those under-rated every-day things that just make you feel good.
Hmmm... holding hands with my husband, buttered toast, homeschooling Christopher and Abbey, a cool crisp sunny autumn day, seeing Abbey in her ballet clothes and her crocs, made from scratch hot chocolate on a cool night, Christopher's cowlick first thing in the morning, seeing Darrell's video-game magazine in the mailbox, the scent of my favorite perfume, hugs, Matthew's smile, Darrell stepping on the shopping cart wheels in the grocery store, sharing Weight Watcher point values with Elisa, hearing Shan call me Mommy, everything about my IPod, and a good glass of sweet-tea!
What a blessing to know that I could keep going and going.
As a final thought...
Ken, Christopher, Abbey and I had a "simple pleasure, feel-good" evening. Friday nights have traditionally meant high-school football. In the off-season and now that our oldest 3 have graduated, pizza and a movie at home has been another "norm." Tonight, though, we enjoyed a Costco hot-dog supper followed by an evening at Roper Mountain Science Center Planetarium. We enjoyed the 3-shows and time in the observatory. A great time was had by all!
Have a great weekend!
Teen Angel by Mark Dinning
(Jean Surrey & Red Surrey)
Teen angel, teen angel, teen angel, ooh, ooh
That fateful night the car was stalled
upon the railroad track
I pulled you out and we were safe
but you went running back
Teen angel, can you hear me
Teen angel, can you see me
Are you somewhere up above
And I am still your own true love
What was it you were looking for
that took your life that night
They said they found my high school ring
clutched in your fingers tight
Teen angel, can you hear me
Teen angel, can you see me
Are you somewhere up above
And I am still your own true love
Just sweet sixteen, and now you're gone
They've taken you away.
I'll never kiss your lips again
They buried you today
Teen angel, can you hear me
Teen angel, can you see me
Are you somewhere up above
And I am still your own true love
Teen angel, teen angel, answer me, please
